According to local news outlet ABC15, an Arizona woman died #ubberaccident after being hit by a self-driving car operated by Uber, the first known death of a pedestrian killed by this type of vehicle on a public road.
The vehicle was in the autonomous mode with a human safety driver at the wheel when it struck a woman crossing the street, outside of a crosswalk. Uber said it suspended testing of its self-driving cars in the U.S. and Canada.
Though we are sorry that this lady was killed by the Uber self-driving car, we must keep into perspective that nearly 1.3 million die in driver related accidents each year. The time for artificial intelligence (AI) is here for the good or for the worse. More people will lose jobs due to AI as well as finding themselves at the mercy of waiting for an autonomous car to turn left at an intersection.
*An autonomous car is also known as a driverless car, robot car, self-driving car or autonomous vehicle.
